opulentus austriaAccording to Statistics Austria, the number of employed increased to a total of 4.182 million in the fourth quarter of 2012 (4.162 million in the fourth quarter of 2011). The rise in the fourth quarter in the year to year comparison was 20 300 in total; part-time jobs increased by

31 700 whereas full-time decreased by 11 400. Self-employed slightly decreased (male +6 100, female -10 800) while employees (male -16 000, female +41 000) increased in the year to year comparison. However, the number of full-time employees dropped by 11 400 men and the number of part-time employees went up by 42 300 women compared to the fourth quarter of 2011. At the same time female full-time employees remained at the level of 2011 and the number of male part- time employees has fallen slightly.

The number of unemployed people amounted to a total of 192 600 in the fourth quarter of 2012, a small increase (+6 600) compared to last year’s fourth quarter, resulting in an unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) of 4.4% (fourth quarter of 2011: 4.3%). Only men were affected by an increase in the unemployment rate (+0.8pp to 4.6%), for women the unemployment rate dropped (-0.6pp to 4.2%) in the year to year comparison.

The year 2012 was characterized by an increase in the number of employed persons (4 184 million;

+39 900 compared to 2011) and also a rise of unemployed (189 100; +10 100 compared to 2011). The number of self-employed dropped by 13 100 (mostly full-time jobs), while the number of employees grew by 53 000 after a rise of 41 400 in the year before (from 2008 to 2010 the number had not changed significantly). Part-time employees increased by +34 400 (mostly women), full-time grew by

+18 600 (mostly men) compared to 2011. Despite of this rise, the level of full-time employees in 2012 is below 2008 (-14 400), the year before the economic crisis; though part-time increased by 113 700 employees compared to 2008.

In 2012, only men (+8.500) were affected by the rise of unemployment in the year to year comparison. For women, unemployment remained at the same level. The number of job vacancies was 69 500, a slight decrease compared to 2011 (73 800).
