The Vienna police are once again looking for young talents. 500 recruits are needed in order to meet the personnel requirements. There will be 1,000 more police officers until 2015.
The problem of recruiting has been solved after extensive training was started in 2009. It was observed that the demand in Western states was larger than in Vienna.
The Interior Ministry stated that this fact is due to the labour market, which offers more possibilities in Vienna than in rural areas. This is why the Ministry advertises “an exciting and crisis-proof job” in newspapers.
The strong criteria to be accepted in the police forces have been relaxed. Age and body size are not that important anymore. In contrast to before, those who completed an alternative service to the military service are now also allowed to apply.
The authority needs at least 3,000 applicants so that 525 students remain at the end of the year. Many applicants usually have a bad health condition or fail the assessment centre.
The Interior Ministry promised the City of Vienna to increase the staff to 1,000 police officers. The Ministry will need to hire double as many recruits in order to balance retirements.
The trade union criticises the plans. They stated that figures were wrong and complained about acute staff shortage.
Mrs Mikl-Leitner said that the Ministry is looking specifically for new recruits among immigrants and those who have already worked in a different job. “Those who have worked before have a different experience in life”, the Minister said.
